Dear Colleagues,
I wanted to let you know that the hard work you put into writing the
statement "Rebuilding Peace:The Priority of Women From Central and
Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States" continues to
pay off.

Last night I was called by the people here at UNIFEM who are working to
help put together the information for the debate in the UN Security
Council on Women Peace and Security. They asked me if there were any
statements where women from the CEE/CIS region have come together to
make a declaration on Peace. I told them about the statement which
originated during the "Women and Peace-Building: Recommendations of
women of Central and Eastern Europe for the Beijing Plus Five Review
Process" sponsored by OSI, and supported by the Karat Coalition and
UNIFEM (Budapest, November, 1999).

This statement will be included today in the Aria Formula of the
Security Council along side similar statements made by other groups of
women from around the world.  This is the first time that the Security
Council has ever heard a debate on the role of women in the peace
process.  Your statement will help solidy the argument that the issue of
Women, Peace and Security is an extremely important one and it will
demonstrate that there are concerned, active women in the CEE/CIS region
who have been, and continue to be, working for Peace.
