WOMEN'S ISSUES TRANSLATION PUBLISHING GRANTS 2000

The Open Society Institute Network Women's Program (NWP) and the Center

for  Publishing Development (CPD) are pleased to announce a competition to

support the translation and publication of books on women's issues. Following the

success of the  competitions in 1998 (Women/Gender Translation Project) and 1999 ('Women

at  Risk' Translation Project), when 35 publishers from 19 countries received

support for  the publication of 46 titles, the project continues in the year 2000 to

facilitate local-

language access to international women's studies literature.

We invite applications from publishers based in: Albania, Armenia,

Azerbaijan, 

Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia,

Georgia, 

Hungary, Kazakstan, Kosova, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia,

Moldova, 

Mongolia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia,

Tajikistan, 

Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yugoslavia.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

The focus of the year 2000 competition is <Women in Conflict> and

<Minority 

Women>, and titles from these areas will be given preference in the

decision 

process


the competition announcement is accompanied by a list of titles

recommended for 

translation on topics such as Women in Conflict, Minority Women, Gender 

Studies, Violence against Women and Women's Health developed by NWP, CPD

and the Central European University Program on Gender and Culture.

Publishers, 

however, may also apply with similar titles from outside the lists. The

lists can be 

found at <http://www.osi.hu/cpd/womenlist.html>


the grants will support primarily publication of translations of

academic or 

scholarly books on women's issues (not including fiction); translations

must be into 

one of the languages of the countries listed above


applications are accepted only from publishers in these countries, and

grants are 

paid directly to the publisher; translators seeking support for a project

should find a 

suitable publisher to make the application


CPD does not provide copies of the original titles for review. Sets of

titles on 

Women and Violence are available in a number of libraries in the region.

grant requests should not exceed $5,000, and publication is expected

within 24 

months


publishers applying for these grants must have recently published at

least two 

academic/scholarly books


translations already supported by another funding source of the Soros 

Foundations/Open Society Institute network (for example, the CEU

Translation 

Project or a publishing support program of a national Soros Foundation)

are not 

eligible for these grants


the grants do not cover 100% of translation and publication costs;

publishers are 

expected to invest some of their own resources in the project, and to

recoup their 

investment through book sales; the grant is intended to offset losses that

the 

publication may incur


publishers should report all other subsidies and grants for the

publication, and the 

grant requested from OSI should reflect any such additional support


once a grant application is approved, OSI will prepare a contract and

mail it to the 

grantee; the contract requires the publisher to commit to the publication

deadline 

and the minimum print run specified in the application


the amount of the translator's fee, as stated by the publishers in their

applications, 

will be included in the grant contract and the publishers will have to

provide 

evidence that the translators have been paid accordingly


for translations of contemporary texts which are under copyright

protection, 

payment of the grant is contingent upon the publisher obtaining written

permission 

for the translation from the copyright holder, and providing OSI with a

copy of the 

contract or letter of permission (we request that all publishers adhere to

a 

copyright protection term of at least 50 years after the author's death)


grants are paid in two installments, 50% upon completion of the

translation and 

provision of a copy of a copyright contract, and 50% upon the publication

of the 

book and providing evidence that the translator has been paid according to

the 

grant contract; OSI reserves the right to verify independently the

accuracy of the 

translation and to withhold the grant if the translation is substandard


grant payments are denominated in US dollars and are made directly to

the 

publisher's bank account


all applicants will be informed of the selection committee's decision by

15 October 

2000.
