CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO
The Summer University in Plovdiv on ¡§Balkan Societies,
Europeanization, Globalization¡¨
(Plovdiv, Bulgaria, September 4 - 16, 2000)
DESCRIPTION
The Summer University in Plovdiv (SUP), which will take place for a
forth consecutive year, partakes in establishing intellectual
exchange and promoting regional consciousness among East-European
academics and students. Co-organized the Open Society Fund-Sofia and
the Bulgarian-American Commission for Educational
Exchange ¡§Fulbright¡¨, it aims at providing students of
different
countries, in the Eastern and Western Europe and the USA, with the
opportunity to discuss the most important current problems of social
and human sciences in the perspective of the South-Eastern Europe.
Through their participation in courses held by well known regional,
European and American professors, the SUP seeks to overcome the
intellectual isolation which still pervades parts of Eastern Europe
and the Balkans in particular. It is aimed at offering to graduate
students the possibility of meeting, of comparing their individual
and collective experiences, of confronting the current burning issues
of the region and critically examine their interpretations and
manipulation.
The general topic of the SUP¡¦2000, ¡§Balkan Societies,
Europeanization, Globalization¡¨, has been chosen as to confront,
on
the one hand, the challenges of the prospect for the European
enlargement in the East and, at the same time, the debatable impact
of globalization on the (countries of the) region. As concrete
analysis has shown, developments in the East since 1989 have posed
the question of rethinking modernity. Discussing the European
enlargement and globalization will warrant the connection of current
transformations of Eastern Europe to the much older process of
Europeanization that has been in the center of political and cultural
debate in the countries of the periphery for one and a half
centuries. At the same time, it is aimed at heeding the
anthropological and sociological dimension of the developments that
take place in cultures where economy, politics, and jurisdiction are
not sufficiently autonomous.
The SUP will take place from September 4 through September 16, 2000.
During each of the two weeks one professor will give a systematic
course of three lectures, and three other lecturers will have one
lecture and/or one workshop each. The focus of the first week
lectures and workshops will be on the historical, cultural and
anthropological dimensions of the general topic. That of the second
week will be on its institutional and political aspects. Students are
supposed to deliver a written essay at the end of the SUP. The
working language of the SUP is English.
ELIGIBILITY
The SUP is open to post-graduate students in the social sciences and
the humanities who are inscribed in MA or Ph.D. courses in the
countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, as well as to all
those who are interested in the region. Admission of around 20
