The Program on Gender and Culture of the Central European University
in Budapest, together with the Social Science Department of the Austrian
Institute of South Eastern and Eastern European Studies and the Feminist
Section of the Hungarian Sociological Association, hosted a conference
at the Goethe-Institut in Budapest on December 3rd and 4th. The
conference was titled "Construction and Reconstruction: Women, Family
and Politics in Central Europe, 1945-1998". The two-day conference was
divided into four panels, each with its own theme. Altogether, fifteen
papers and two country reports presented information about women in
Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia and the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia, but general comparisons between Eastern and Western Europe
were also drawn.
The book consists of articles by Andrea Peto on women in politics, Borbala Juhasz on women in Hungarian 1956 revolution, Maria Mesner on abortion law, Ela Hornung on Austrian women`s delegation to the Soviet Union 1945-1957, Maria Rosslhummer on women in the Austrian Freedom Party, Gabor Gyani on family as fiction, Julia Szalai on women and democratization, Olga Toth on marriage, divorce and fertility, Anna Kende and Maria Nemenyi on two generations` perception of femininity, Monika Bernold on the Austrian family seen on TV, Eva Vajda women in media, Peter Krasztev on family massacres, Marina Balgojevic on Serbia in 1990s.
