GLOBALIZATION - SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT-
local government: challenges of the 21st century
International Conference organised by Konrad Adenauer Foundation will be
held from 13 to 14 September 2000 in Berlin.
Globalization, the theme of the beginning of the new century, still arouses
mixed reactions in many people. Since globalization is a thoroughly
contradictory and multifaceted process involving various "transgressions",
people have reservations and anxieties, especially due to the numerous
unsolved regulatory problems of political, economic and social life.
On the other hand, the constant growth of interdependencies also opens up
unprecedented chances for reacting untidily to the world's challenges and
problems with lasting and forward-looking solutions. Along with many other
issues, this holds especially true for the search for ways leading to a
sustainable development - both in the industrialised countries and the
developing countries.
In addition, there are good reasons to assume that the issue of
strengthening today's local government structures will become the central
topic of the world's future - especially in times of globalization.
The chances and risks involved in these global processes will be debated
together with internationally renowned experts at the conference in Berlin.
The following topics will be discussed:
Decentralisation and local government in the field of development
co-operation - results and perspectives;
The successful replacement of "Democratic Centralism" by new
local government structures in the countries of central and
eastern Europe;
The Mediterranean - a region of bright prospects:
local government structures in some selected Mediterranean
states;
Local government structures in federal political systems:
a model in the global context;
Local government and sustainable development:
how do municipalities implement the objectives of
local agendas 21 in various parts of the world?
