Dear Karat members and friends,
Please, find attached the WomenAction questionnaire.
The questionnaire will provide the WomenAction in their web-work with important
information on how women use information technologies and how we can
make sure that the way we present information is a way they can use
it. Already it is clear that in Africa, for example, women prefer
e-mail discussion groups to web-based discussions.
What we would like you to do is place your name on the document
holding the covering letter (brf2surv) and send the material through
to members of your coalition/group.
I hope you will be able to do this quickly - this week if possible, as the
WomenAction would like to be able to present the results of the surveys on the
European WomenAction 2000 website and they want the information to be
used in the discussion on Section J of the Beijing Platform for
Action. I think the information will be useful at the ECE meeting as
well.

THANK YOU FOR COMPLETING AND RETURNING THE FORM
Dear women,
As your regional/national networker for the Beijing +5 process, I would like
to recommend your participation in the WomenAction questionnaire.
WomenAction is the communications network to enable women around the world
to communicate with each other about Beijing +5, and to exchange information
on the subject.
To obtain our Beijing +5 objectives, it is imperative to have good
communication and information facilities. The 1995 Beijing World Conference
on Women demonstrated that computer network facilities can support our
activities. But what about women's organizations who are not connected to
the Internet, women who don't speak English or NGOs lacking information
management skills?
WomenAction intends to organize and design its network in such a way that
maximum participation is possible. Through the questionnaire, WomenAction
offers you the opportunity to speak out about the communication problems you
anticipate, and about your information and training needs. Your voice can
make a difference in the communication facilities about Beijing +5, and
indirectly in our achievements towards women's empowerment. Therefore, I
kindly advise you to fill-in and return the questionnaire, as explained in
Ellen Kole's email.
Kind regards,
TELL US HOW TO DESIGN THE BEIJING +5 COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK!
You may know about WomenAction, the global communications network to support
your activities for the Beijing +5 review process. Since women's
organizations are the main users of WomenAction, we would like to hear your
ideas about how you wish to communicate and process information. By filling
in the WomenAction questionnaire, you can tell us what kind of technologies
you have and what problems you experience, so we can anticipate your
participation. You can let us know what kind of skills you need, what
language you prefer to communicate in, how you want to search Beijing +5
information, and so on.
WHAT IS WOMENACTION?
WomenAction is a communications network to enable women around the world to
communicate with each other about Beijing +5, and to exchange information.
Examples of WomenAction activities are regional discussions about Platform
for Action themes such as 'poverty' and 'violence'; monitoring government
actions on areas like 'decision making' or 'health'; and the collection and
sharing of NGO alternative reports.
Although the core of WomenAction consists of Internet-based technology,
provisions are made to involve women's organizations who cannot (fully) use
this technology. If you have email only, if your grassroots cannot make use
of computer communications at all or don't speak English, filling in the
questionnaire is even more important! Let us know how you can participate in
WomenAction.
HOW DO I EXPRESS MY IDEAS FOR THE WOMENACTION DESIGN?
To have a say in the design of the WomenAction network, fill in and return
the accompanying email questionnaire. The directions for use explain how it
all works.
Please return the completed questionnaire BY EMAIL BEFORE AUGUST 18th TO:
kole at pscw.uva.nl
Should it be a problem to return the questionnaire by email, then please
print and fax it to ASCoR/University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands:
+31-20-525 3681, 'Attn. Ellen Kole'
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH MY INPUT?
We treat all filled-in questionnaires confidentially.
After analysis, WomenAction uses as much as possible questionnaire results
in the design of the communications network. A user evaluation of the
effectuated network design will take place later.
The questionnaire results will also be used in the Beijing +5 lobbying for
Section J of the Platform for Action: 'Women and the Media'. Further,
researcher Ellen Kole will use some results for her Ph.D. study to improve
electronic network introduction for NGOs in developing countries (a booklet
with practical suggestions for NGOs is forwarded).
A summary of the questionnaire results is published later this year on the
WomenAction Internet site (http://www.womenaction.org/2000). If you do not
have a World Wide Web connection and want to receive the summary by email,
please fill in your email address in question 48 of the questionnaire.
I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE MY VIEW BUT DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO FILL IN ALL QUESTIONS:
We appreciate it if you at least fill in the sections I, II and VII; plus
one of the sections III, IV, V or VI.
We advise to select at least the sections of your concern. For instance, if
your organization will be needing lot of support, fill in section VI. Or if
you have specific wishes how to find information or experience problems in
information retrieval, fill in section IV.
WHO CAN I TURN TO FOR QUESTIONS?
If you want to know more about (filling in) this questionnaire, you can turn
to Ellen Kole by email: kole at pscw.uva.nl
Ellen Kole, University of Amsterdam,
on behalf of the International Informationcenter and Archives for the
Women's Movement (IIAV), a working group member of WomenAction
