The Program on Gender & Culture at the Central European University is now accepting
applications for full fellowships for nationals of the CEE/fSU to participate in a
one year master's program in gender studies, or doctoral support fellowships in
Budapest, Hungary for the 1999/2000 academic year. Up to 38 fellowships
covering tuition and living expenses are available to individuals from Central and Eastern
Europe and the former Soviet Union. A wide variety of other financial aid programs
are available to all students on a competitive basis.

The Program

The field of gender and culture studies is rich and diverse, full of controversy and active
debates on significant questions concerning gender differences and inequalities.  As a
"discipline," gender studies takes as its primary focus the historical and social elaboration
of the differences between men and women, the interdisciplinary critique of simple naturalism,
and a concern for social and other inequalities between the sexes in relation to the broader
cultural context. The Program on Gender & Culture focuses on exploring the already established
theoretical paradigms from Western perspectives and those emerging from the East, especially in
view of the transition, to foster and support new theoretical and practical initiatives
emerging from the region.

The Program on Gender & Culture aims to furnish advanced graduate students and junior faculty
with specialized training in gender studies in a broad cultural context, enabling them to
develop their own research projects and teach gender studies in their home institutions. The
program is accredited to grant the Master of Arts degree in Gender Studies by the Board of
Regents of the State of New York (US) and the Master of  Philosophy degree by the Open
University (UK). In addition, the Program on Gender & Culture offers a one-year certificate
specialization for CEU doctoral students and supports Ph.D.-level visiting fellows through the
Doctoral Support Program.


Entry Requirements

Interested individuals may apply by following the general CEU application guidelines and are
expected to have a first university degree or equivalent. Places are available for up to 30
students per year. In addition, Doctoral Support Program candidates should submit a 3-5 page
description of their Ph.D. thesis including research questions, theory and methodology, and the
current status of the project; a 1-2 page proposal of research to be carried out at CEU; and a
letter of support from their Ph.D. supervisor.


Master of Arts Program

Students registered for the MA degree in Gender Studies will be required to complete 40 credit
hours (32 course credits, 8 writing credits). In addition, MA students write a research thesis
under the guidance of  a faculty member who serves as an advisor. Thesis defense takes place at
the end of the Spring Session as an oral exam.


Master of Philosophy Program

Students enrolled in the Master's Program may choose to apply to register for the MPhil at the
end of  the Fall Semester. Selections are based on academic performance and a 20-page thesis
proposal.  Primarily a research degree, a 15 month course of study allows students to explore
their field of interest in much greater depth than the MA. Registered students take 16 credits
of course work in the Fall Semester including one Directed Seminar, two terms of the M.Phil
Seminar and are expected to write a minimum 120-page research paper; other course work is
optional.


Doctoral Support Program

The Doctoral Support Program is available to graduate students registered in an accredited
Ph.D. program.  Positions are held on either a semester or academic year basis, and during
their term at CEU, students will receive consultation and supervision from CEU faculty.
Although not required to attend classes, students are encouraged to interact with other Program
students and faculty, present their work in informal workshops and in general contribute to the
life of the Program.

Doctoral Specialization in Gender & Culture Studies

The Doctoral Specialization is open to CEU Ph.D. students who wish to concentrate in  gender
studies. The Certificate requires 24 credits of gender studies course work including  4 credits
from a Directed Seminar, 20 credits from other Program course offerings and a final project.

Additional Courses/Activities

In addition to degree and non-degree tracks, the Program on Gender & Culture offers other
courses and activities in the field. A bi-weekly Faculty Seminar is open to advanced graduate
students and faculty in the Budapest area. Another of the program's key features is the
Regional Seminar on Gender & Culture, funded by the Higher Education Support Program, which
gathers 20 academics, predominantly from the region but also from Western Europe and North
America, for a series of workshops on current gender studies topics. Program students
participate in the seminar sessions and may serve as  temporary interns, thus allowing them to
interact with faculty _ many of whom are leading scholars in gender and culture studies _ and
to participate in new developments in the field.
