ABSTRACT:
>
>This paper will look at various dimensions of the new global
>order in terms of its economic, political, social and ideological
>implications. On the one hand there is a supposed liberalisation
>of the economy and a push towards centralisation at the global
>and national level and decentralisation at the local levels. On
>the other this very liberalisation is causing the state to
>abdicate its role as safeguarding the interests of citizens and
>is also allowing for a range of identities to emerge which are
>leading to extreme conservatism, fragmentation, disintegration
>and alienation.
>
>All of this has an immense impact on women and it seems likely
>that it will reverse many of the gains women may have made. On
>the one hand the more vocal and sophisticated aspects of the
>women's movement will increasingly get coopted and mainstreamed
>into this global agenda and on the other it will marginalise and
>further pauperise those not in the mainstream.
>
>The women's movement (women's studies and women's activism) must
>face this challenge so that it does not lose its impetus. This
>paper will critically look at the women's movement in Pakistan
>over the last 20 years, will concentrate on where it is today and
>areas of concern for the future.
