Project Description

The Network Women's Program (NWP) and the Network Library Program of the
Open Society Institute/Soros Foundations are pleased to announce a
network-wide competition for library core collections in gender/women's
studies and women's issues.

During the gender/women's studies workshops at the NWP's first Forum in
Budapest in September 1997, participants from national foundations,
gender/women's studies programs and women's NGOs articulated a need for
substantial collections of basic and advanced international literature on
women. Wanting both to learn from previous developments/experiences and to
adapt them appropriately to local contexts, representatives of women's
groups and programs identified book collections as one of the essential
ingredients for starting/expanding their endeavors.

These needs fit well with the mandates of both the Network Women's and
Library Programs. The Network Library Program's "Targeted Collections" area
is designed to further develop a library's existing collection in a
specific field. The long-term goals of the NWP's "Women and Education" area
are:

   * to provide resources for integrating gender-sensitive perspectives at
     all levels of education, including public education;
   * to promote library development: enhance existing collections,
     integrate women's studies literature into mainstream collections, and
     provide new collections for alternative sites, such as women's NGOs.

This pilot project will begin to address these needs by making 50 awards of
book collections (in English). Organizations/institutions receiving awards
may CHOOSE FROM ONE OF THREE TYPES of collections:

   * gender/women's studies classics (20 sets)
   * advanced international gender/women's studies literature (10 sets)
   * women's issues books for women's NGOs that have public outreach or
     educational activities (20 sets)

In the spring of 1998, the NWP solicited recommendations of books from an
international committee of scholar/activists representing diverse countries
throughout the OSI Network as well as other international experts in
gender/women's studies and women's issues. The three book collection lists
represent a general consensus on the most important and useful literature
in this rapidly-growing field. Each collection will contain approximately
40 books (see lists in following email). Institutions, programs, and
centers that receive book collections must demonstrate that the collections
will be open consistently to the public.

Eligibility

   * Institutions, not individuals, may apply.
   * Applicant institutions must be located in the countries of the OSI
     Network, as well as Belarus and Turkmenistan.
   * Applicant institutions must have facilities where collections will be
     open to the public.
   * All applicants must demonstrate prior commitment to gender/women's
     issues.
   * Gender/women's studies programs, projects, or centers--whether
     university-affiliated or independent--may apply for gender/women's
     studies classic or advanced sets.
   * Women's NGOs working on a broad range of issues (including but not
     limited to women's information centers) may apply if they have
     conducted prior public outreach or educational activities.
