Subject: Symposium: Women Academics: A Global Perspective
Annual Meeting Attendees:
Division-J, the International Relations Committee and Committee on the Role
and Status of Women in Educational R&D are sponsoring a symposium entitled
"Commonalities and Differences Among Academic Women: A Global Perspective".
(Session 18.49, Tuesday at 4:05, Hyatt, Water Tower, West Tower).
We have gathered a panel of scholars from around the world who will briefly
discuss the following issues
1. Brief description of higher ed system in the country.
2. Some assessment of research on women academics in the country: what
progress has been made, what are the roots of the problems, who recognizes
the problems? How are the problems constructed?
3. Each panelist will focus on a specific issue of choice.
The panelists and the women they study are Sandra Acker, OISE (Canada and
Great Britain); Margaret Kamau, University of Toronto (Kenya); Linda
Johnsrud, University of Hawaii, Manoa (Korea); Melanie Walker, formerly of
the University of Western Cape, South Africa (South Africa); and Elizabeth
Hatton and Judith Parker, Australia (Australia). The moderator is Susan
Twombly, University of Kansas (Costa Rica) and the discussant/summarizer is
Mary Ann Sagaria, Ohio State University (Indonesia).
Because the panel members do not represent all academic women of the world,
we extend an invitation to all conference participants to attend the
session and to participate. All we ask is that you prepare a one page
summary addressing the three items listed above.
If you have questions about the session, please address them to Susan
Twombly at stwombly at falcon.cc.ukans.edu or Mary Ann Sagaria at
sagaria.1 at osu.edu.
We look forward to making this a truly international session. See you in
Chicago.
