Thomas Coram Research Unit at the Institute of Education University of
London is planning three major one day conferences in Autumn 1997
about children and childhood in a changing world. The aim of the
Conferences is to contribute to an emerging new agenda on childhood,
children and services, which recognises children as social actors, a
distinct social group with specific rights, a recognised position in
society and a voice to be listened to.

CHILDREN AND CHILDREN'S SERVICES: TIME FOR A NEW APPROACH
(October 7) coincides with the launch of an important discussion paper
which explores the implications for children's services (including
schools) of new thinking about children and childhood and questions the
assumptions underlying current policy.

CHILDHOOD AND EMPLOYMENT: TIME FOR A NEW AGENDA
[November 25] will analyse parental employment trends, their
implications for children and explore children's perspectives on
employment, family life and childcare services. The aim is to encourage
a new agenda on work and family life.

AFTER THE EARLY YEARS: PLAY, LEISURE AND CARE FOR YOUNG
ADOLESCENTS [November 26] will report new research with young
people aged 10 to 13 and their use of services after school and in the
holidays. It will present the perspectives of the young people
themselves as well as parents and providers. Presentations will cover
policy and service innovations.
