* Press release: nestor - Network of expertise in long-term preservation
of digital resources is ex changing data with the Australian PADI subject
gateway

Bilingual search for long-term preservation resources available free of
charge / Access to German a nd international sources of information

The "nestor" network of expertise in long-term preservation of digital
resources has just put into practice an agreement made in April 2005
between the Australian colleagues working on the PADI (Preserving Access
to Digital information) portal at the National Library of Australia and
the nestor partner, Goettingen State and University Library (SUB).
Searches for relevant information resources in the nestor information
database (<http://www.digitalpreservation.de>www.digitalpreservation.de /
Subject Gateway) can now be extended, if desired, to include searches in
the extensive PADI data set. In return, the Australian partners plan to
integrate the nestor records into their service.

A facility for immediate switching between the "nestor" database and a
combination of "PADI & nestor" is now available in the nestor information
database, which can be accessed free of charge. At present there are 2034
records on topics such as long-term preservation in general, rights
management, formats and media types, national activities, digitisation and
 manage-ment.

For each record in the database there is a summary complete with detailed
bibliographic information, and the corresponding original document is
available as a PDF or HTML file via di-rect links from the nestor website.
An additional convenient feature is the ability to switch between German
and English in advanced search mode. The nestor records are held
bilingually (German-English) and the PADI records are available in English
only. There is, however, a facility to at least display PADI topics and
document types in German.

PADI: experience with long-term preservation of digital resources since 1997

The PADI subject gateway on all aspects of long-term preserva-tion of
digital resources (<http://www.nla.gov.au/padi>www.nla.gov.au/padi) has
been main-tained at the National Library of Australia since 1997 and
provides comprehensive pointers to international sources of information on
digital preservation. Furthermore, PADI pro-motes cooperation with other
projects and institutions, as well as with colleagues outside Australia
working on long-term preservation of digital objects. In the same way as
PADI, the nestor information database provides a comprehensive service for
 the German-speaking countries.

Each of these information services identifies, selects, cate-gorises,
describes, and provides references and/or internet links to publications,
projects and other information sources on the long-term preservation of
digital objects. Interna-tional discussion and research are thus promoted,
and users are supported in their efforts to address issues of digital
preservation in their institutions or to carry out appropriate research.
PADI and nestor intend to establish a regular ex-change of metadata
including all changes and updates. In this way, redundant duplication of
work can be avoided, users can be offered a correspondingly broader range
of information and the experience of regional and/or national communities
can be disseminated more widely.

"Not only will the services benefit from the exchange of metadata between
nestor and PADI, but also users, for whom easier access to the information
in both subject gateways will be made possible. This metadata exchange
will extend the coverage of each of the databases and will avoid
duplication of work in the selection and description of relevant
resources," states nestor project director, Hans Liegmann (Die Deutsche
Biblio-thek).

"nestor - network of expertise in long-term preservation of digital
resources" is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and
Research (BMBF) from 2003 to 2006.

Building bridges with BRICKS
DigitalCultural Heritage Networks in Europe
Workshop
June23, 2006

Residenz zu Salzburg

This workshop is of particular interest for decision makers in Cultural
Heritage institutions, expl ores the potential of networking the digital
assets of such organisations.Following a keynote speec h on new trends in
Digital Cultural Libraries, we will demonstrate results from BRICKS a
project w ith the goal of building a European Digital Cultural Library.

BRICKS provides a network infrastructure that allows access to all
resources from any node in the n etwork and a set of components which can
be used to build applications tailored to the requirements of a specific
institution. This workshop covers both aspects. First, we will show a web
application
that uses the infrastructure directly for storing, organizing, describing,
and searching digital co
ntent. Then, the application developed for the Austrian National Library -
a set of tools to build online exhibitions - will be demonstrated. A
question-and-answer session and a panel discussion com plete the workshop.

The workshop will take place following the conference An Expedition to
European Digital Cultural He ritage at the same venue.

NCLIS Issues Report from Symposium on Mass Digitization

Focus is on Implications for Information Policy

Washington DC May 10, 2006. The Chairman of the U.S. National Commission
on Libraries and Informa tion Science (NCLIS), Dr. Beth Fitzsimmons,
announced today the publication of a report from the s ymposium
"Scholarship and Libraries in Transition: A Dialogue about the Impacts of
Mass Digitizati on Projects." The symposium was held at the University
of Michigan on March 10-11, 2006. The URL
for the free 24-page report is
http://www.nclis.gov/digitization/MassDigitizationSymposium-Report.pdf.
Persons wishing to request a hard copy of the report may send a request
to info at nclis.gov.

The idea for the symposium was inspired by the announcement in December
2004 for a partnership bet ween Google, Inc. and five major research
libraries to digitize over 10 million unique titles. Th is partnership
launched a new era of large-scale digitization heretofore not imagined
feasible or
affordable. However, the "Google 5" project has generated many questions
about the legal, social,
economic, and other impacts of this and similar projects that will
inevitably follow Google's lead . The symposium brought together
scholars, librarians, publishers, government leaders to discuss t heir
concerns and issues. NCLIS co-sponsored the symposium, which was planned
and organized by th e University of Michigan Library staff and funded
mainly by the University of Michigan.

After the symposium, because of their responsibility to address the
information and learning needs of the American people, NCLIS
Commissioners summed up nine major issues that have information poli cy
implications and connected them to key points made during the symposium.
The nine issues or a reas that the Commission identified to have
potential impact on national information policy are:

1.	Copyright: How should important aspects of copyright-fair use, orphan
works, opt-in vs. opt-out
 models-be handled in digitization projects?
2.	Quality: When is the quality of OCR good enough? What about quality of
content and authenticati on?
3.	Libraries: What are the roles and priorities for libraries in the
digital age? 4.	Ownership and preservation: Who will assume long-term
ownership of books and journals and other
media? Who will take responsibility for long-term preservation of books
and journals and other me
dia, and preserving the public record?
5.	Standardization and interoperability: How can the silos of digital
initiatives communicate with
 each other?
6.	Publishers: What are the roles of publishers and booksellers in the
digital age? 7.	Business models: What business models are needed in the
era of mass digitization? How will the open access movement affect the
economics of digitization?
8.	Information literacy: What should be done about information illiteracy?
9.	Assessment: What types of assessment are being used? How will we know
if digitization and elec tronic access are meeting people's needs?

This report sums up the key points under each of these nine topics and
concludes that finding worka ble solutions will have to involve authors,
scholars, publishers, libraries, associations, and gove rnment agencies.
The solutions will involve education and awareness, policies,
responsibility, st andards, quality, cooperation, rights, sustainability,
technology, and assessment.

The Webcast of the entire symposium may be found on the symposium Web
page: http://www.lib.umich.edu/mdp/symposium/.
