Checklist for the Certification of Trusted Digital Repositories Completed
and Released

This announcement is also being made today, August 31,
2005, on our Web site and to a variety of other lists.

RLG has just released a draft report for the
certification of digital repositories. The draft,
titled "An Audit Checklist for the Certification of
Trusted Digital Repositories," is available at
http://www.rlg.org/en/page.php?Page_ID=20769.
It is the product of a task force working on a joint
project between RLG and the National Archives and
Records Administration (NARA).

The goal of the RLG-NARA Digital Repository Certification
project has been to identify the criteria repositories
must meet for reliably storing, migrating, and providing
access to digital collections. The "Audit Checklist"
identifies procedures for certifying digital repositories.
Leveraging the RLG-NARA checklist, the Center for Research
Libraries (CRL) Audit and Certification of Digital Archives
project will test audit the Koninklijke Bibliotheek
National Library of the Netherlands), which maintains the
digital archive for Elsevier Science Direct Journals, the
Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social
Research (ICPSR), and Portico, an archive for electronic
journals incubated within Ithaka Harbors, Inc.
Stanford's LOCKSS system will also participate in this
effort.

Robin Dale, manager of both projects, says: "We look
forward to receiving comments on the draft and to hearing
the response from the community." Comments on the draft
are due before mid-January 2006 to Robin.Dale at rlg.org
(+1-650-691-2238).

MIP Conference
JANUARY 2006
Metals in Paper / 2nd International Iron Gall Ink Meeting

The MIP--European Thematic Network Metals in Paper is organizing a final
network Conference in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) - January 25 - 27, 2006.
This conference is also the successor to the 1st Iron
Gall Ink Meeting, which was held at Northumbria University in 2000.

The meeting will take about 2-3 days and the exact dates will be
published soon ate <URL:http://www.miponline.org>.

The following *deadlines* are established:

Abstracts are due by: 31 October 2005
Acceptance to be informed by: 15 November 2005
Full papers are due by: 15 December 2005
    Conference: 25-27 January 2006

The aim of the network is to respond collectively to specific
threats to European paper based cultural heritage. These risks
include the deterioration, conservation and storage of paper and
ligno-cellulosic objects that have been affected by e.g.
metal-tannin corrosion throughout, many of which are stored in
archives, libraries and museums.

The aim of the final MIP conference is to present the
state-of-the-art in the field of the four defined theme-groups:

    1. Fundamental scientific aspects of paper degradation - this
will focus primarily on diagnostic and analytical
techniques, studies of degradation processes (including
endogenous and exogenous factors), and methodologies for
        paper stability evaluation.

    2. Chemical aspects of active conservation - this will include
conventional conservation methods as well as the use of
        inhibitors and deacidification techniques

    3. Physical aspects of active conservation- this will include
paper splitting, strengthening, leaf casting and cleaning

    4. Preventive conservation issues - this will include
environmental aspects of storage, boxing etc.

We welcome papers, poster and exhibitors for this conference.

If you are intending to submit a paper/poster related to the aim of our
network you are welcome to send your abstract (100 words
maximum). At present, you can send your abstract to
john.havermans [at] tno__nl or jean.brown [at] unn__ac__uk. Soon
on-line registration will be available via
<URL:http://www.miponline.org>.

All incoming papers will be peer reviewed.

Looking forward to receive your paper and to meet you in Newcastle.

7. PEM/Climate Notebook: software for environmental monitoring

Message forwarded from the Conservation DistList (Instance: 19:13,
Friday, September 2, 2005) _____Forward header_____
Date: 2 Sep 2005
From: Douglas W. Nishimura <dwnpph [at] rit__edu>
Subject: PEM/Climate Notebook

The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) would like to announce the
latest developments in environmental monitoring and analysis created and
produced by IPI specifically for libraries, archives, and
museums.

Climate Notebook(r) 3.1, the latest version of IPI's software for
environmental monitoring is now available for purchase through our
website at <URL:http://www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org>. This
management tool for organizing, analyzing, and reporting on
environmental conditions was field-tested by nearly 200 libraries,
archives and museums in the US and has been purchased by many more both
here and abroad. The Preservation Environment Monitor(r)
datalogger (PEM) was tested at the same time, and both tools
received very high praise from users. Nearly 1,500 PEMs are
currently in use. These products are based on years of scientific
research on the natural aging of organic materials and the long-term
effects of temperature and humidity on collections.

Climate Notebook incorporates algorithms that provide quantitative
measures of the risk of both natural aging (spontaneous chemical
change in organic objects) and biological decay (expressed as the
likelihood and severity of mold growth on susceptible collection
materials). Version 3.1 adds a metric for mechanical or physical
deterioration caused by gain or loss of moisture. The new
Dimensional Change metrics are modeled on the behavior of a virtual block
of wood and the risk of its physical change during
equilibration with the environment. Climate Notebook now allows the user
to analyze the preservation quality of a storage environment in terms of
all three major types of deterioration - chemical,
mechanical, and biological.

The new software includes IPI's Dew Point Calculator as a
stand-alone executable. This program illustrates the interrelation of
temperature, relative humidity, and dew point, and can be used to explore
how these three elements determine the best available
preservation environment based on a particular environment and
mechanical system. The software package includes a detailed Help
file and a downloadable workbook, "Step-by-Step: Achieving a
Preservation Environment for Collections." Technical support is
available by phone or e-mail from IPI at no charge.

More information about these tools for preservation is available at IPI's
website or at <URL:http://www.climatenotebook.org>.

IPI is a nonprofit laboratory at the Rochester Institute of
Technology in Rochester, NY, devoted to scientific research in
preservation technology. Our goals are based on strong scientific
evidence that heat and moisture are the primary rate-controlling
factors in almost every mode of decay. Control of these factors in the
storage environment is of fundamental importance in preservation and is
more broadly effective than other, more limited, preservation actions.
Since 1985 IPI has supported the preservation field through research,
publications, educational activities, products, and
services.

Funding for IPI and its environmental research has been provided by the
National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
