<div class="">Another possibility is a cutting edge tool led to exhaustion, which acted on a material of narrow shape. This specific U-shape of the end result from wear according to the following mechanism: while the cutting edge, thiner than the edges, wears
down, the edges, thicker, wear less quickly and become prominent. This is a common feature which I could often observe on Neolithic and Chalcolithic tools. </div>
<div class="">Of course, this needs to be confirmed by wear observation. </div>
<div class="">Can you see any striation on both side of the U-shape end (if the surface of the bone is well preserved, you can see them with the naked eye)? Is the end sharp or smooth? Does the base of the tool show traces of percussion or not?</div>

Apologies about the delay, this is a fascinating object. Is it hollow? I suspect that it might be. It is probably a fairly elaborate handle but there is also the possibility that it is a medieval lucet, an implement used to create braids. Difficult to see if
there are any prongs at the end. The so-called ‘English’ variant of lucets uses caprine metatarsals and has two distinctive prongs at one end, as in the photo here. The earliest lucets go back to the late ninth century and they continue into the twelfth century.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>
