<p class="MsoNormal">Attached is a photograph of a beautifully carved object of ivory from an excavation at Great Dunmow in Essex.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">It looks so familiar but I just can’t put my finger on any immediate parallels. The nearest I can think of are a knife or daggard scabbard sheath mounts and it is likely medieval. The two pieces likely forming the back and front? As you
can see from the fragment to the left in the picture, there is a small iron rivet for fixing; the piece forms the edge of the widest part of the object and refits the piece just to its right. The most complete side/example measures c 60mm in length.<u></u><u></u></p>
