<p>we would like to invite you to the session we have proposed for the next congress of the European Association of Archaeologists EAA in Budapest end of August 2022:</p>
<p>Session 263. CRAFT SPECIALISATION IN WORKED HARD BONE MATERIALS: CONVERSATIONS ON A COMPLEX CONCEPTUAL CATEGORY IN ARCHAEOLOGY" (discussion session with formal abstracts)</p>

<p>The deadline is February 10, 2022 for submission of papers/posters.</p>
<p>We have proposed a discussion session with the aim of sharing and discussing a widely used concept as is "craft specialisation" in Archaeology. We hope this could be a interesting and relevant topic for you.</p>
<p>The dialogue in a specialised environment, like is the bone industry, will allow us to draw relevant conclusions to better understand the role of hard animal materials in societies with different degrees of complexity, as well as to contribute to the wide debate on specialisation. Nevertheless, the session is by no means closed!! All colleagues working around this concept (whatever their study material and chronology) are more than welcome and are invited. The aim is to enrich the discussion.</p>
<p>We therefore welcome contributions from Archaeology, Ethnography, Cultural Anthropology, comparative studies, etc.</p>
<p>Probably "Craft specialization" is one of the most "freely" employed terms in Archaeological literature (perhaps more so in Prehistoric Archaeology than for other periods?) along with other complex and subjective concepts as luxury, exotic, valuable, etc.-. The origin of this laxity may perhaps be in the widespread assumption that specialization is self-evident, and therefore does not need to be defined and that the concept is understood in the same way between different cultural contexts. Additionally, criteria for "specialised" craft activity are usually not made explicit, making comparative studies difficult.</p>
<p>We are pleased to invite you to share the various criteria, both objective and subjective, you use to define and identify craft specialization in your archaeological assemblages. We aim at a diachronic and transdisciplinary session in order to assess different definitional practices, regardless of chronological period.are welcome. We invite you to share how you identify the archaeological signature of craft specialization using examples from your own work.</p>
<p>We hope that the session will be of your interest and we are looking forward to meet you in Budapest.</p>
