Dear Jennifer,
Such objects are usually explained as belt divider, bead separator or even a weaving tablet. One example (also not complete) was found in Caesarea, Israel. It did not originate in a dated locus but is probably of the Roman/Byzantine/Early Islamic period (1st-11th
cen.). see:
Ayalon, E. 2005. The Assemblage of Bone and Ivory Artifacts from Caesarea Maritima, Israel, 1st-13th Centuries CE (BAR IS 1457). Oxford, p. 30 (with other parallels from the Levant and Europe), Fig. 8:89.
Dear All,

I have been advised that the attached item might be a bead-separator (it is also incomplete). I have not seen one like this, and overall I am having difficulty finding references to assist in its identification/interpretation.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding it's functional identification or of references useful to its analysis I would be greatly appreciative.

Thank you & Regards,
