<DIV>Arthur MacGregor forwarded this message to me from Fabian Brenker about
antler and bone crossbow components. Andy Halpin has supplied the details of
Irish crossbow nuts from his 2008 book, and Fabian is clearly aware of finds
from France, Germany and Switzerland, but he is wondering about finds from
further afield. Any help very gratefully received,</DIV>

<DIV>Dear <SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: verdana, sans-serif">Arthur,</SPAN></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>what a pleasure to read from You. Here is why I wrote to You:</DIV>
<DIV>Since some weeks I'm doing my master's thesis on the highmedieval crossbow
(9th-13th century).</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Due to the fact that writen sources have been part of lots of researches
since over a hundred years, I will concentrate on archaeological finds and the
rare illustrations and sculptures.</DIV>
<DIV>I am looking for all parts of crossbows (bows, strings, shafts and
triggers) and wooden parts of the bolts als well als belt-spanners. Nuts and
arrowheads are too much and in the first case with to less outcome if one is not
looking for the first evidence. The latter are a completely own field. But the
antler triggers are a very important point and just known since about thirty
years. Untill today, most of the archaeologist don't know about them and give
the objects very interesting functions and names. I know some triggers from
France als well. Due to the fact that it is my work to search all this, I don't
want You to have much trubble with ist. But if You find or remember anything,
even bones with shots, I am very happy to know it. Because english literature is
not that much in Germany, I'm happy for every archaeological evidence outside
Germany which helps me to find even more literature and published finds. I think
the 2008 Dublin-book from A. Halpin gives good information about the finds in
Ireland, but not in England and Scotland.</DIV>
<DIV>As I have seen, You worked a lot with animal bones, horn etc. Do You know
any triggers in GB? They are made out of to identical pieces and hold tohether
with iron, bronze or bone rivets. In Germany and France they look like the ones
in addition. Do You know such elements? I was wondering if some of the York
fragments could be part of them but I don't even know if they exist on the
British Isles.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Thank You very much and best greetings</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
