Because ungulate astragals (from sheep/goat, red deer and cattle) are quite common in Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic in central Balkans (Vinèa culture), and some time ago we had a lively discussion here on bonetools on diverse usage of astragals across Europe. <br>
If you're looking for medieval astragals only, I can send you reference for the presence of unmodified astragals in Slav Christian graves in central Balkans in approximately same time as your Viking examples. <br><br>
