<div dir="ltr"><div><div>Dear Alice,<br></div>I absolutely agree on the multifunctions and on our own preconsumptions. The bone "ring" (and not always "finger-ring") assemblage of Dispilio is unique for the neolithic Aegean, and consequently difficult to approach. Nevertheless, some of the larger rings do bear signs that could be interpreted as wear gained during archery (e.g. some vertical discolorations on the surface). Of course I am not a use-wear specialist, but my question here is whether there <i>are </i>any other neolithic cases of possible archer's rings. <br>

Rings are a great untouched question - probably because we look at them and have immediate associations with decorative finger rings. Some of the rings you showed could also be closures, or connectors or even (the antler rings) the tops of container stoppers that are filled with a bone plug of some sort. We have a number of those objects in our MBA. I guess though the bottom line is we always have to be careful of assuming that form equals function. Once there is a hypothesis we must turn to our use wear people to start to say something about macro-micro traces from contact and gesture. I myself have learned this the hard way...</div>
