Dear Marloes,

Fallow deer - that is particularly interesting. and it is really beautiful!. Please let us know when the piece is published - I would like to read the article presuminging there is at least an English abstract. A great way to begin on the mailing list. Would you ask the archaeologists - once the piece is properly published of course - whether we can use this piece as one of the bone tools of the month on the WBRG website?

Dear David, Alice and others,

Thank you for your responses, this is very helpful. The 14C dating and the dating of the decoration of this piece apparently differ about 100/150 years or so.

I am especially looking for complete decorated antlers indeed, but also antlers with perhaps similar decoration or from the same period. I just received permission to send you one of the photographs, it is an amazing object! I have to ask you however not to use this photograph in any way, because the photographs are soon send to the press and the piece will be published soon.

Any information is welcome on this piece!

Happy new year to all,
Marloes

Dear Marloes,

The restorator who tried to work with old antler trophies had many problems. It is much more difficult to work on antler that has dried out completely but, of course, nothing is impossiible only impractical. There are plenty of examples of Avar containers and medieval powder horns with rich decorations composed of the beam and truncated tine bases. But I understand you want the entire antler. There are Mesolithic examples of Alces alces from Denmark. The article is in the Crafting Bones volume (and written by George Nash) and I am sure there are other examples. I would be interested to hear.
