<div>Dear Amy,</div><div> I am sure that Sonia O'Connor will write to you but in the event that she is struck by a fit of becoming modesty.I would seriously recommend just about anything she has written on the subject. In additi you should contact Owen Mapp in New Zealand (<a href="mailto:eriksenmapp@paradise.net.nz">eriksenmapp@paradise.net.nz</a>) since he has real, hands-on experience with working scavanged ivory from sea mammals albeit from his part of the Pacific. Of course, Arthur MacGregor (1985) also discusses ivory as a raw material in his book: <span id="btAsinTitle">Bone, antler, ivory & horn: The technology of skeletal
materials since the Roman period,(<em>Croom Helm 1985, rep 2003)</em> . I just checked and it is available from Oxbow books for something like $25.</span> </div><div> </div><div>Cheers!</div><div>Alice</div><div><br><br>

Dear colleagues,<br>Can anyone suggest publications which deal with the production of ivory tools, especially those of walrus ivory? I am especially interested in studies which explore (1) how the material's distinct form and structure influenced a toolmakers' choice of manufacturing tools and techniques, and (2) how these tools and techniques may have differed from those used to work other types of osseous materials. Time period and culture are totally open!<br>
<br>Thanks for your ideas, and my apologies for cross-posting.<span class="HOEnZb"><font color="#888888"><br>Amy<br clear="all"><br>-- <br>Amy V. Margaris <br>Assistant Professor of Anthropology<br>
