<div>Dear Dave,</div><div> Circle and dot decoration is used continuously in the Carpathian Basin from the Neolithic up to the Middle Ages which here officially begins in the 10th century. Otherwise, it is more like seeing spots everywhere - especially on antler combs, and antler containers. I can look around for images and send you part of a dissertaion (sadly for you in Hungarian but (as I recall with some images) which discusses Avar bone tools in Transdanubia. </div>
<div> </div><div>Best,</div><div>Alice</div><div> </div><div>PS One of our conservators has worked out how to produce circle and dot and variens of the motif. There is an english translation. The catalogue of the Aquincum bone tools (1st-5th c. with lots of input from Germanic tribes by that time and the Sarmations/Quads on the Eastern side of the Danube ) will come out in September. with some examples of circle and dot decorations, mostly on antler.<br>

<div>I am currently researching Early Medieval bone working and despite the prevalence of Ring-and-dot motifs on artefacts, I can find only two examples of the tools themselves having been found (Stare Mesto and Levy Hradec, both in MacGregor "Bone, Antler, Ivory and Horn") and would like to know if anyone has come across similar tools anywhere between about 500-1100AD.</div>
