All floors of this type are usually called 'knucklebone floors' in English, even if they are made with (or decorated with) other elements such as teeth and metapodials, such as here - see the article and gazetteer by Philip Armitage - ARMITAGE, P. 1989. 'Knuckle' bones does usually refer to the astragalus, though I suppose that an ape (or a person) which walks on its knuckles will be walking on the distal metacarpals. Are bikkelbeen the same??

but, presently, I would like to show you what I wrote two days ago
to Mr .Picod, for the interest of these bones/littles pebbles (cf.
your picture) :<br>

Deux objets sont entrés dans mon champ/chant de mémoire pour parler
de ça, le four à petits cailloux de boulanger iranien et un
instrument à écailler le poisson.<br>
Dans le four en question, on chauffe une sole non pas consistante,
mais fait de petits galets gros comme de petites noix, sur quoi on
jette une pâte assez dense pour ne pas trop couler, et qui est
saisie aussitôt par la chaleur. On retire du four, on secoue sur un
tamis à mailles ad hoc pour faire tomber les cailloux collés, qui
vont aussitôt resservir, et ça vous fait un pain délicieux, épais
d'un bon doigt, creusé de logements comme autant de fossettes
digitales (par impression du bout des doigts). La jonchée de
cailloux me rappelle ces nappes de boules de buis que l'on a pu voir
entre dos et dossier de conducteurs de taxis, si vous voyez ce que
je veux dire, et cela me rappelle aussi un engin à main et boules de
buis tournantes pour se faire maigrir les bourrelets, qui a connu
une certaine vogue il y a une trentaine d'années.<br>

Hello Colleagues
This example of a 'knucklebone floor' in the Jura is very interesting.
I have just discovered another one in England, at Uppark, a National Trust house in Sussex. It is part of a outdoor game larder designed by the architect Humphry Repton.
I would be very interested to hear about other examples. Also, does anyone have recommendations about the best way to conserve such floors? This one is outdoors, and probably needs some conservation.
