Isabelle, yes, it may be Chalcolithic, there are some Salcuta finds in
Iron Gates (one grave was found on Lepenski Vir), although in the
vicinity of Knjepište site there are none, and Bronze Age (Žuto Brdo
culture) in this case is more probable. The small circle near
perforation could be both accidental and ornamental, and looks like
Bronze age decoration. <br>
Of course, it could be Late Neolithic as well - but there is no Late
Neolithic in Iron Gates II region. <br>
So, most probably, this is a stray Bronze Age find. <br>
Sandra, in Iron Gates I know only about the famous piece from Cuina
Turcului, from Serbian side there is no mention of them in
publications, and since I haven't seen personally the material from
Upper Gorge area, I can't tell you definitely if there are any or not. <br>

It is a bit early for a cheek piece, probably, but it could be an
arrowshaft straightener/flaker. The wear around the perforation
suggests that it could have been used to straighten shafts, although
not over a very long period of time.<br>
Do you have any decorated horse phalanges? I am very interested in
finding out if there are others from Iron Gate and what their ages are.<br>

I have - again - a question concerning early and middle Neolithic bone
objects. This antler piece comes from early Neolithic site Knjepište in
Iron Gates (near the Iron Gates II hydropowerplant, i. e. downstream of
Lepenski Vir), and should be of Early Neolithic origin. However, I have
never seen anything quite like this before - and it does not seem
Neolithic to me. All these Iron Gates sites also have traces of Roman
occupation, and several sites in Iron Gates II region have Bronze Age
levels as well (Žuto Brdo culture), and I think this piece is younger
than Early Neolithic (data on stratigraphy is scarce). <br>
I would really appreciate if anyone could point me to some analogies. <br>
