<big>Fine ! The quantity of wear is about the same on the right and on
the left, taken account of bone density, hardness and so forth in the
proximal metaphysis and in the distal one. It reinforces the
impression/idea that the two wears occured at the same time, from two
linked turning pieces. Maybe the one on the left was of lesser diameter
- which would make "dig"/excavate bone quicker.<br>

That the wear went to such a slim strip of bone (on the left) suggests
that the metapodial what supported underneath. It could have been tight
to/on/around a post/pole with a kind of belt betweeen the two
rolls/axes, and another similar piece (the other metacarpal...) could
have been tight in superimposed position, facing the first/underlying
one... ... ...<br>

Could be the other exemplars from elsewere be photographied and brought
into the discussion ? If they are some found at the same place, it
would be good for developing a further comment. If the moving/revolving
is continuous (more than 180 °), the grooves should be the same on the
(evetual) two facing bearings.<br>

Would argue contexts for some special technological environnement ? On
top hills or along rivers ?<br>

I have an object from a site that we excavated in Winchester that I would like to ask you about (see attached photos). It is from a rubble later dated anywhare from 5th-13th century !
The cattle metacarpal has a large scoop taken out of the proximal end, the surface is perfectly smooth and very heavily polished but the rest of the bone is not. At the distal end, which is damaged, another scoop has been removed but it is not smoothed or polished to the same degree. Striations in the polished surfaces indicate a longitudinal direction of wear. The wear is so great and so regular it would almost imply that it was machine made.
Any help would be most gratefully received
