>> The arrival of ivory in the Iberian Peninsula is attested from recent Prehistory. During the third millennium BCE, its use increased markedly, especially in funerary contexts. Its emergence and implications in the archaeological record, together with other exotic materials, have prompted growing interest in identifying its provenance.

>> This study reviews the methods applied over recent decades in the Iberian Peninsula to investigate ivory artefacts, including the identification of the species from which they were made—such as Hippopotamus, Loxodonta africana, and Elephas maximus, among others. To this end, we consider a range of analytical approaches, including FTIR, ancient DNA, and proteomics, which make it possible to determine the origin of the ivory and, consequently, to explore the exchange and trade networks that may have operated in the past.
