Dear Simeun,

Thanks for sharing this interesting object. I totally agreed with the idea that it may imitate a knife/dagger considering the guard and the butt. I just want to add a little bit upon Alice's discussion, the photo does not show the details of cuttign edge or blade tip, if there's any use-wears that may tell us if the object was put into uses for just function as ornament. And the length of blade seems to be shorter than handle, which may indicate it imitates the hunter's knife or tool knife instead of a combat knife. Also, if the object is not thoroughly cleaned, you may still have the chance to collect some residue samples from the drilled hole which will tell you if the stirngs used to hang the object are made of some types of plant fibers.

Hope your research goes well!

Best,
Jie

Dear Simeun,
There is a new interest in this subject. I published a paper on the subject some years ago which I am attaching here. I failed to include imitation where the size is deliberately altered (from normal size to bigger especially). Miniaturization is evident from your example as well.

Best,
Alice

Dear dr Choyke,

Firstly, I would like ti express my excitement for your rapid answer! Thank you! This is very intersting POV, indeed!

I will definitely try to study this subject! (Imitation of objects). Do you maybe have any starting literature to suggest, I would be very grateful! If you have time, of course.

Otherwise, I will do it myself!

Thank you once again!

Kindest regards,

Simeun

Dear Simeun,
First of all, I think your 'bone' pendant is made from antler - probably red deer or moose. Secondly, it looks rather new - there is certainly not much wear around the hole. It was obviously meant to be suspended but frankly, it reminds me of late Neolithic, Chalcolithic and even Bronze age antler objects (from Hungary and Switzerland at least) made in imitation of composite objects. Imitation is an interesting subject and meant to enhance or draw attention to some intrinsic social value of the imitated object. For example - here is a little axe-blade shaped object, manufactured out of bone and also meant to be suspended from a MBA context in Hungary. What is being imitated would either be a polished stone blade or a bronze axe-blade, not because metal blades were not widely available but because the shape holds layers of social meaning , the details of which can only be guessed about. Your object, to my eye looks like a hafted blade (knife?).

Dear all,

firstly, I hope you are all doing well!

I have attached a photo of a app. 5cm long bone artefact, which was interpreted as a bone pendant.

In relation to this, I wanted to ask you for opinion or analogies, if you are familiar with it.

Thank you in advance!
