The UISPP's ‘Modified Bone and Shell’ commission is launching a call for papers from archaeologists and ethnologists on the theme of ‘Engravings on bone (hard materials of animal origin): gripping systems, signs and decorations’.

 

The aim is to critically examine the challenges and possibilities of distinguishing between unintentional markings and those that are utilitarian or decorative. We will explore their various functions and meanings, while considering the cognitive and cultural insights that these practices can bring to our understanding of human evolution.

 

The round table will be held in April 2026 at the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Berlin. Entries close on 31 January 2025:https://uispp.net/en/commissions/activities/international-workshop-engraved-bones

La commission ‘Os et Coquilles Modifiés’ de l’UISPP lance un appel à communication auprès des archéologues et des ethnologues sur le thème des « Gravures sur os (matériaux durs d’origine animale) : systèmes de préhension, signes et décorations ».

 

L’objectif est d’examiner de manière critique les défis et les possibilités de distinction entre les marquages non intentionnels et ceux utilitaires ou décoratifs. Nous explorerons leurs diverses fonctions et significations, tout en considérant les éclairages cognitifs et culturels que ces pratiques peuvent apporter à la compréhension de l’évolution humaine.
