This presentation will briefly review the evolution of the osseous industries in the Lower Danube area between the 7th and 5th millennium BC. Within the various cultural phases their composition is discussed looking for specific innovations or the preservation of certain typological and technological patterns.

The osseous industry of the Early and Middle Neolithic was characterised by the manufacturing and use of bone tools made from the household waste of domestic animals, less frequently from boar teeth and quite sporadically from deer antlers. The typology is dominated by various types of awls, smoothers, spatulas and spoons. Transformations during the Chalcolithic are evident. Bone is replaced by deer antler while certain technological procedures, as well as typological categories disappear. The tool types show the predominance of bevelled tools and awls, followed by spear and arrow points, harpoons, handles or spatulas.
