I just come on this series of 7 mails : whalbone, scapula? But it's much symmetrical, and I am on countryside, without any bone to compare

Dear Fiona,

I would suggest Peter Paulsens books:
PAULSEN, P., 1939. Axt und Kreuz bei den Nordgermanen. Deutsches Ahnenerbe, Reihe B: Fachwissenschafliche Untersuchungen. Arbeiten zur Ur-, Vor- und Frühgeschichte . Berlin: Ahnenerbe-Stiftung-Verlag.
PAULSEN, P., 1956. Axt und Kreuz in Nord- und Osteuropa. 2. erweiterte und verbesserte Auflage von Axt und Kreuz bei den Nordgermanen . Bonn: Rudolf Habelt Verlag.

There is a chapter about axes made of bone, and at least one axe mentioned there is made of whalebone (found from Grönland and dated to the 10th-11th centuries). I have pdf of this chapter of the 1956 book, I add it to the letter.
I also add my article about some antler axes found from Estonia.

Best wishes,
Heidi

Hi everyone,
This axe head came up on a burial site of probable medieval date in Ireland. It was found among animal bone and disarticulated human bone, and seems to be made of antler.
I am looking for any parallels that people might know of. And also anyone's thoughts on function, as it would seem to me that it would have little use for woodworking or for butchery - but I am open to correction on this.
Thank you all, as always
