 Hi Fiona,

I concur with Jean-Marc, the material is whale bone and appears to be a
vertebra with partial centrum.

The chopping marks on the vertebra appear to follow and leave some of the
natural morphology of this skeletal element - thoracic or lumbar vertebra.
