Dear Marta and colleagues,
Just a few weeks ago I received a photo of a similar pair of perforated bone plates from South Bulgaria yet finer and more ornate. Interestingly, they were likewise found in the grave of a male, right under the chin. That is why the archaeologist who excavated them back in the 19900ies - Krassimir Nikov - thought they could have been used to close a mantle. The grave also contained a bone and a bronze arrowhead and is dated ca. 12th century BC.
I also find it difficult to identify comparable pieces. That is why I find it exciting that similar ornamental pieces could have been much wider distributed than I would have expected based on the remainder of the finds in that grave. I wish others will follow suit and signal comparable finds from elsewhere.
Best wishes and stay healthy everyone!
Petar

Dear worked bone list,
I am currently working on a Bronze Age site near Toledo (Spain). The two attached bone artefacts were found near the mandible of a human skeleton. In my opinion they were fashioned from cattle radii but I have no idea of their function. The double perforations are present only on one side. The proximal and distal edges of the bone piece are polished. The archaeologist thinks they might be part of a necklace. They are 57 mm in length and the lateral-medial width is 34 mm aprox.
Any thoughts, parallels or comments would be most than welcome.
Best regards and stay healthy,
Marta
