Dear Petar,

Thank you for the advice and the images, I agree it does appear to be too heavy to interpret as a bead separator. Alternative interpretations are eluding me, however. There is some use-wear on two of the larger perforations but only on one margin and not corresponding to any use-wear on the opposing ends perforations, I'm not sure how to interpret that however.

Regards,
Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,Here are two?pictures illustrating the function of bead separators.?In the first one, the?separators are not so clearly seen, but?they look like flat plates with multiple perforations responsible for ordering several strings of beads, so that they don't get intertwined - that is where the strings get tight on both sides of this necklace. From what I see your object may be a bit too heavy for such function?unless your strings of beads were wrapping something bigger than human life-size or dividing even heavier strings of shells, as illustrated in the second picture of native American dentalium necklace.I hope this helps. Good luck with your research,With best wishes,Petar

Dear All,

I have been advised that the attached item might be a bead-separator (it is also incomplete).? I have not seen one like this, and overall I am having difficulty finding references to assist in its identification/interpretation.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding it's functional identification or of references useful to its analysis I would be greatly appreciative.

Thank you & Regards,

Jennifer
