Dear colleagues,
A few weeks ago I posted a message on ZooArch about three bone artifacts
that were found in an arable field in the northwestern part of the
Netherlands. Below this field there is a late Neolithic site, of which a
small part was excavated in the 70s of the last century. All three
artifacts are made of ulnae (two right and one left) of brown bear (Ursus
arctos). Two of them are chisel-like tools, one looks more like a piercer.
As far as I know, they are unique for the Netherlands; normally these kind
of tools are made of bones of deer, cattle, etc.
Alice Choyke and François Lanoë already sent me information about similar
finds from Slovenia and the USA. If any of you happens to know more finds,
preferably from Europe, I would be very happy to hear about it!
Very best,
Jørn Zeiler
