Hello Vinayak,
I have done bone/antler materials testing using small, standardized bone
samples using a very fancy and precise Materials Testing System (MTS) (also
called a Universal Testing Machine) instrument that a faculty member in an
orthopaedics/biomedical engineering lab kindly made available to me. (See
attached for some details, although I was testing strength and not
hardness.)
I could never have afforded the equipment myself but it benefited the
faculty member -- probably from a grants perspective -- to have the
equipment see wide use. Perhaps someone at your university who works on
ceramics or biomaterials would similarly be willing to give you some
equipment time? I paid a relatively small sum to have a special part
machined for anchoring my samples in the MTS instrument, and donated the
part to this scientist's lab when my research was complete. I'd like to
think that helped compensate for the equipment and training time he
provided.
Retired U. of York biology professor John Currey is the king of bone
testing. You may find help in one of his articles or even by contacting
him in person. He's really lovely!

Best of luck with your project,
Amy
