Dear all,
This query from Adrienne Powell was posted on the big mailing list site
for archaeozoologists Zooarch. However, I thought it much more likely there
would be someone on the WBRG mailing list who would have seen something
comparable. If you do want to respond then please respond to both the list
*and* to Adrienne (adrienne_powell at yahoo.com).

Best,
Alice

Dear Alice,

Thank you for your kind offer! I would be grateful if you could post my
query to the WBRG list. Here is a link to a pic on Zoobook
http://zooarchaeology.ning.com/photo/worked-cat-tibia?context=user

Its also attached here. There is no shortage of worked bone in this
assemblage but its the usual suspects: deer, whale, cattle & sheep. I'm
generally reluctant to jump on the ritual bandwagon but given the
association of cats with Freyja & the frequency of bird bones suitable for
whistle? manufacture, I do wonder

Adrienne

Dear Adrienne,
Why don't you address this question to the WBRG mailing list
(*bonetools at listserv.niif.hu
<http://listserv.niif.hu/>)* - I would be glad to post it for you. We have
a number of members working on Norse worked bone materials. This is
actually the only instance I have ever heard of worked cat bone (beyond the
obvious use of wild cat teeth and claws as beads in necklaces and clothing
decoration from any period and where in the world that I can think of.

Dear all,

I'm currently working on a Norse period assemblage from the Western Isles
and have come across a cat tibia which has been worked - a nice slot has
been cut into the anterior surface of the distal part of the shaft, like a
hole in a whistle. Does anyone know of any similar cases of worked cat
bone?

Cheers,

Adrienne
