Dear Vinayak,

I was given a pdf of an article by Osipowicz who did some experimental work on softening bone. I've attached it in case it may be of use to you. Best of luck with your work - it seems a very interesting study.

Dear Lena

I am also interested in the subject (Iron Age Bone Tools) you had discussed in your mail. Few Indian scholars in their anthropological work discussed about softening of bone by craftsmen in various water based solutions. However, I am not sure whether they were discussing about fresh or dry bone?
Moreover, in my anthropological study I also come to know that 30 to 40 years back craftsmen were used water solutions for cleaning fresh bone. Some craftsmen also informed me that these solutions were also used (as a mean of) for softening bone. The authenticity of this detail is still not checked through scientific tests (Whether these solution really soften bone?) and I am planning to do so. In experiment these solutions can also be used on dry bone. Through this way we can also get detail about whether they can worked over dry bone.

Dear all,

Are there any information on whether bones used for bone working (Iron Age - early Post-medieval) had to be relatively fresh, or could they be stored for months (years?)? MacGregor mentions soaking antler to make it easy to cut, but would this also work with dry bone?

I have difficulty finding information on this, as most things I can find concern modern bone working with dremels etc, which I assume would be less sensitive to freshness/dryness of bone than using hand tools.

With thanks,
Lena

Hi Lena,

perhaps the attached paper will help you. I have found it some months ago while searching for another paper. Seems to me quite interesting as I had similar problems concerning adequate literature.

All best,
Markus
