Dear Alice
Do I no longer have access to Bonetools? My last message got a bounce message. I had a spam problem for a couple of days, but this should now be sorted out for this email.

Subject: Re: [Bonetools] 10th Meeting Belgrade...archery trends any thoughts...
Dear All
Hopefuly you all had an excellent conference. I wish I could have attended!
I was just re-reading one of Laszlo Bartosiewicz's papers which got me wondering about archery trends across central and western Europe. If anyone can offer any papers, references or advice regarding excavations, particularly burial sites, which show changes in the status of archery.
What I'm trying to see, is if archery gained status in Europe at different periods -- eg increased finds of archery related artefacts, particularly in funerary contexts -- which might be related to the cultural or physical presence of
1. Huns - late 4th- 5thC AD
2. Avars - Carpathian Basin - 6-9thC AD
3. Chazars - N Caucasus - 7-10thC AD
4. Mongols - 12-13thC AD
For instance, but outside my period of interest, the prestige associated with arrowheads/wristguards of various materials associated with high-ranking burials in the Bell Beaker culture, such as the Amesbury Archer (Swissman?) and Boscombe Bowmen (Welshmen?) burials in Wessex UK.
Lastly, any refs regarding the changing relative use of bone, stone and metal for arrowheads.

Dear Paul,
Well, if your chair was going to go on strike it chose just the right place for it - in France, the very homeland of strike action. I am very, very relieved that you made it home in one piece and I am totally sure it was worth the effort. It was certainly very good to have you with us during discussions and to get the benefit of your practical experience. Will you send an image of a rope splicer and an apple corer with explanation to me to add to our bone tool of the month objects on the Website?
Cheers,
Alice
