Hello Marloes, thank you very much for another article amazing! I'll get closer to a Belgian colleague who reads Dutch and that will make me know the details of this amazing discovery! The decor of your object is quite close to that of Coisy!
Thanks
Annick

Dear David and Sonia,

Thank you very much for your answers and for this very interesting article. I was asked the question of a container, given the quality of closing both ends, using small pegs ... I do not have any other photos you submit now, I am sorry!
Thank you again!

Dear David,

Sorry I missed the early date. Should have read Annick’s email more carefully.

Thanks,

My reasoning for the salt container over powder horn was the dating (X-XI) and it’s similarity to one of a similar period (XI I believe) that Marloes showed me.

David

Dear Annick and Dave,

I agree that it looks like a container but I was thinking about a powder horn. I remember Marloes showing me a similar shaped example from Holland. Can you send some move views?

Hello Annick,

It looks like a “salt container” of the Early Medieval. Similar containers of antler (and sometimes bone) are found around Germany, Switzerland, Poland and even the Netherlands etc. An interesting article on them can be found at http://www.academia.edu/2899033/Cum_grano_salis_-_Salt_and_prestige._Late_Viking_Age_and_Early_Medieval_T-shaped_and_Cylindrical_Salt_Containers_2007_

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for comparables that object antler found in the Somme, in a context X-XI S, on a rural habitat.
It could be an abbot ferrule or "tau", or simply a stick of highly decorated shepherd. Do you see parallels?
I thank you in advance.
sincerely

Annick Thuet
