[Bonetools] weaving spools from perforated sheep metapodials

Dear  all,
    I have just come across a reference to perforated sheep metacarpals
used as spools from a medieval context.  somewhere in Europe (I suspect
northern Europe). Does anyone know anything about it or even better have
images?
