Dear Petar,
The sites of ventoji where bone and antler artefacts have been found are dated to the period 3500-2500 cal BC.
I have found that dots-and-circles decoration was used in the Bronze Age sites (ca 3000-1500 BC) in Asia (Harrappa, Mohenjodaro, Altyn-depe, Tell Abraq), but these are mostly ivory items, e.g. combs, pins and divination sticks, and these sites are also so far away.
Best wishes,
Heidi
Dear Heidi,
Could you remind us the absolute dates of the Neolithic in Ðventoji.
I have few things in mind that might be relevant but just want to make sure we talk about comparable time periods.
With best wishes,
Petar
Dear all,
I am trying to find references to Neolithic bone items decorated with dots-and-circles.
In the attachment is a drawing of a harpoon-head from the Neolithic site of Ðventoji in Lihtuania (drawing from R. Rimantiene 2005. Die Steinzeitfischer an der Ostseelagune in Litauen).
There is also one antler axe from Estonia, Pärnu River, and a bone dagger from Latvia, Lubana Lake, but these are both stray finds and one cannot be sure about their dating.
Does anyone know such decoration on bone tools from Neolithic context?
Thank you in advance,
Heidi
