In Neolithic lake shore settlement in Central Europe (Switzerland, Austria, Germany) a lot of examples for using birch tar as glue to fix flint, bone, antler and wooden artifacts are known. I have recently published an overview about Neolithic bone and antler tools from lake dwellings that includes a few examples of birch tar on artifacts (Schibler, Jörg (2013). Bone and antler artefacts in wetland sites. In: F. Menotti & A. O'Sullivan (Eds.), The Oxford Handbook of Wetland Archaeology, Oxford, 329-345.

There are also many projectile points from the Swiss Neolithic with tree pitch on them - even some complete arrows with the projectiles still attached to the arrows. Jorg Schibler discusses this numerous times. Here are just a few of his publications.

Dear colleagues,
I am looking for as many papers as possible about the use of adhesives for hafting bone tools. I would be especially interested in prehistoric tools. If you have any paper in pdf or any suggestions, please, let me know.
Thank you so much in advance!

Dear Marloes,
Is there any evidence of wear on the serrations? Either on the flat sides or
the edges of the points?

Dear all,
Does anyone have references or parallels for this Roman tool? It is made of
a rib and dated to the 3rd century AD.
Best wishes,
Marloes

Sonia is right - it would be interesting to check if wear signs or
striations can point towards work with tougher material such as fish
scales (Poplin's suggestion) or softer material such as fibers or wool
(if it was a kind of wool comb or a tool used to soften or straighten
fibers).

I agree - this is one case where even a crude (low magnification) use wear
study would be critical. Is this piece Roman or Iron Age?
