Dear all,

A couple of years ago I studied a bone comb assemblage made from 
splitted cattle ribs, dating to the Early Copper Age (3300-3000 cal BC) 
and documented at a domestic context in Southern Spain (the Los 
Castillejos site). Most of these combs display several marked grooves at 
the bottom of each tooth, quite similar to some grooves observed on the 
surface of ethnographic combs used for combing hair daily (see figure 6 
in CHOYKE, 2009: “Grandmother’s Awl: Individual and Collective Memory 
Through Material Culture”, Materializing Memory: Archaeological Material 
Culture and the Semantics of the Past (Barbiera, I., Choyke, A.M. y 
Rasson, J. eds.), pp. 21-40).
These combs are also quite small and display a normalized shape and 
manufacturing process. We have not undertaken any experimental studies 
yet in order to ensure their function. I have attached some pics.
