[Bonetools] problem wiht reconstructed antlers

Dear colleagues,

I need a piece of advice regarding some antler artefacts, coming from an
old collection - they were reconstructed with some substance, I presume
gypsum, and after that painted.

What should I do with this? Is there a way to remove it gently, without
damaging the antler, or would it be better not to touch?
I tried first to rinse the paint with small amount of water, but it stayed.
