Dear all,

The one pictured in Van Vilsteren is made of bone, not of walrusivory.

Best wishes, Marloes

Dear Etan, When you sent the photo of the rings I wondered about the size of the larger ring as it seemed rather big to be turned from a transverse section of longbone . The smaller disks are clearly bone but I was wondering if the ring was ivory. I have seen these in elephant ivory and the one in the paper Heidi sent is also ivory, possibly walrus ivory. Unfortunately I cannot see any structures in your image of the large ring when I zoom in. Do you have any other photo’s that might show this? Subject: [Bonetools] bone objectsDear all,Here are some bone rings found in Jaffa, Israel by the Israel Antiquities Authority in a context of – probably – the beginning of the 20th century. In that time Palestine was already rather modernized, especially a port city like Jaffa. The objects could have been imported, mainly the large ring.Does anyone have any idea about the use of these rings, any parallels?Etan
