Dear Ian, This is a very interesting piece. The teeth were deliberately removed? I have seen this only a few times, but the comb was then used as a singled sided comb. Holes can also indicate a repair, but that doesn't seem to be the case for this comb. For Dutch combs from the 17th/18th century see:

Marit Gaimster has passed on to me details of this ivory comb from a recent excavation in 
London. 
It was found in a context with medieval material but is likely to be a little later in 
date. At 
 
first sight it is an ordinary comb, for which the teeth are now missing. However, a series of 
 
evenly–spaced holes have been drilled into it and the end has been modified. Is this a case of a 
 
comb being adapted for a secondary use, possibly as a winder for thread ? Or did it have some 
other 
 
(secondary) function ?
