Here is an image of a somewhat similar object from the area of the Civil
Town 1st c. AD - the very first days of the occupation. It is made from
eithe a huge domestic cattle or aurochs long bone (prob. dorsal radius
diaphysis). Marloes. Could you also give the archaeologists the precise
provenience of your object. There do seem to be parallels but it would also
be nice to know what you mean by Iron Age. This object is certainly NOT
Roman and most likely a product of the local late Celtic population in
contact with the Romans. The o-called conquest here in Pannonia was
anything buta conquest. the local Celtic elite had been waiting for years
for hypocaust floor heating!
