Hello Marlos and Alice,

I know there are wooden equivalents existing where several of these where
attached together so it would be a bigger ruler when needed and then could
be shortened by folding one back on another. But I must admit that the piece
you sent seems a little too short to belong to such a system.. But why not?
Moreover, the fact that the sides are not flat does bug me a little, because
it could be hard to measure properly with a non straight ruler..

It looks a lot more like the central part of a composite comb to me, as
those found in Roman and Medieval contexts. Indeed, there is a part of a
composite comb found in France that wears almost the same marks (though it
is more decorated, the cuts on the longest sides are definitely there). You
can find it in J.C Beal's catalogue *Les objets de tabletterie antique du
musée archéologique de Nîmes, *1984. N°384.

Here's the object I'm talking about: the cuts may not be as regular as
yours, but I hope this might still help.

Sincerely,

Bénédicte.
