One place you might look is in Lynn Gambell's 2008 book, The Chumash World
at European Contact: Power, Trade, and Feasting Among Complex
Hunter-Gatherers.

It's a great compendium with excellent references. The Chumash were very
into shells (used for money and other purposes) so they might provide an
interesting comparison.
